Heat Wave Brings Early Start to Sugarfall Season

CHARLOTTE — Days of above-average temperatures have brought an early start to Sugarfall Season, with fresh deposits appearing across Charlotte earlier than usual.

Several neighborhoods reported sugarfall events over the weekend, particularly near parks, greenways and busy sidewalks. Plaza Midwood and NoDa appeared to have the highest concentration of deposits, though officials said reports were still being verified.

"We usually don't see activity like this until later in the summer," said Department of Surface Resources spokesperson Dana Skimmer. "Higher temperatures and increased foot traffic have accelerated the season."

Many residents welcomed the early arrival.

"It's one of my favorite times of year," said an ant surveying a fresh deposit beneath several softened sprinkle logs. "It's always worth going out after a warm afternoon."

Officials reminded residents that deposits often attract heavy foot traffic during peak afternoon hours.

Several employers also reported an increase in late arrivals Friday morning, with workers citing sugarfall activity along their route.
