Frog Phenom Draws College Attention at Pond Showcase
CHARLOTTE — College scouts gathered Saturday at a retention pond in South Charlotte for the annual Carolina Amphibian Showcase, where young frog prospect Mason Wade reportedly delivered the highest vertical leap ever recorded at the event.
Fresh out of the tadpole stage, Wade drew attention during jumping drills after clearing multiple blades of grass in a single bound and briefly disappearing from sight.
“You don’t normally see hops like that at this age,” said recruiting analyst Trevor Reed. “That kind of explosion is elite.”
The showcase evaluates young frogs on jumping ability, reaction speed and mosquito tracking fundamentals, serving as a pipeline for competitive programs across the Southeast.
Witnesses said scouts crowded the water’s edge immediately following Wade’s jump, several hurriedly scribbling notes onto damp leaves.
“He changed the atmosphere out there,” said local dragonfly and talent evaluator Dean Skimmer. “Everybody stopped what they were doing.”
While scouts praised Wade’s athleticism, coaches said he remains raw.
“A lot of what you’re seeing right now is instinct,” said coach Dana Ripple. “But the tools are there.”
As of press time, Wade had ended interviews abruptly after spotting movement near the shoreline.
