CHARLOTTE — In an effort to ease congestion along heavily trafficked sidewalks, city officials this week unveiled a dedicated “bugpool lane” running parallel to an existing bike lane along Siegel Ave near Uptown.

The initiative encourages ants, beetles, and other ground-level commuters to travel in groups of two or more during peak hours, a move officials say will improve overall flow and reduce crowding along major foraging routes.

“Too many single-occupant crawlers,” said one ant, gesturing toward a lone spider weaving through traffic. “It’s inefficient.”

Crawling solo during peak hours may result in fines, officials said, though enforcement is expected to be “light but visible” during the program’s initial rollout.

Officials confirmed spiders will not be eligible for exemptions.
